Hug a Stranger at BYOB Perth

This is a video art piece I shot and edited for “BYOB Perth” (Bring Your Own Beamer) a video projection night to share video art with others. I wanted to see how hard it would be to match two separate shots placed side by side as well as experiment with super slow motion post production effects.

It was shot with a canon 7D with a tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens using a glidecam 400HD.

To get the shots I needed to match together I would have to do several takes from each side of the walkway of each subject walking until I had a shot I felt I could work with. But in reality that was harder then it seemed as it was a working train station and near a busy night area there was always people walking around. As any unintentional background extras would ruin the split screen timing effect. I just had to wait until it was clear and go for a take. In the end I only ended up with one good shot from each side. Luckily that was all I needed.

FASHiON HEiR – BTS Video

FASHiON HEiR is a promotional company with a large experience in fashion photography and marketing. Here is a quick look behind the scenes from one of there many photo shoots.

So lately I’ve been meeting some awesome people doing great creative work around perth and have had the opportunity to work along side some cool people. Luo Qi from FASHiON HEiR is a talented fashion photographer from perth and puts together some great shoots with his team. Brodie Butler another great photographer and HDSLR enthusiast like myself. Brodie shot all the footage on his 5D MKII mostly with a glidecam 4000HD and then passed it on to me for the edit. I’m pretty happy with the results though I feel I could of tightened up some of the shots towards the end. As with most creative projects deadlines get the better of us. If I didn’t have several more edits to get done I would like to fine tune it all but I’m still really happy with it. It was a pretty cut and dry edit synced to music no post production apart from the colour grade, which just quietly I think looks great. Really enjoyed putting in the warm tone and feeling.

Curtin O Day Video

Curtin O Day Video from Luke Brooks on Vimeo.

This is a time-lapse video produced for Curtin University orientation week to illustrate many of the buildings around campus. I shot this over three weeks using a canon 7D & canon 450D.

Music used:
Adrian Lux, Teenage Crime (Original Mix)

Main Lenses used:
Canon 28mm f2.8 prime
Tokina 11-16mm f2.8

To get many of the moving shots I used a time-lapse slider system that I custom built (I’ll try and put more info on that later). The other moving shots were animated zooms and pans in post production.

When I get some more spare time I’ll put together a behind the scenes video and blog.

Swan River Sunset Time-lapse

Swan River Sunset from Luke Brooks on Vimeo.

This is a time-lapse of the sun setting over the Swan River in Perth. Shot with a 28mm lens and canon 7D over two hours. I did some post processing in After Effects to get the nice colours and added some blur to smooth out the background. If you really wanna know more about how its done and put together I’ll gladly write about it, otherwise enjoy.
Below is a still from the time-lapse with a quick edit in photoshop.

Cottesloe Beach, Tilt Shift Shift Fakery – 7D

Cottesloe Beach, Tilt Shift Fakery – 7D from Luke Brooks on Vimeo.

After getting my hands on a neat little plug-in for Final Cut Pro I knew I had to try it out. Shrink ray by Crumple pop gives your videos a tilt shift effect with very little effort and is fully configurable. Just follow the online videos and instruction and everything will be working in minutes. I went down to Perth’s Cotteslose beach on a busy sunday and filmed some quick shots with my 7D to try the affect on. Everything worked out really well and the video looks great, I can’t wait to find more excuses to use this effect.

Music used is Elle Et Moi by Cicada

Short film on Coffee

Coffee from Luke Brooks on Vimeo.

While testing out my new camera I put together this short film on making a coffee. Shot with a Canon 7D with a 18 – 135mm f3.5 lens and a 55-200mm lens was used just for the close up of the coffee pour. Edited quickly in premiere and rendered with out any colour grading. Enjoy.
